Some golden ideas to bring in a golden new year

So, the clock is ticking down to the end of a funny old year. My beloved day job has become my day, evening and weekend job, but I’ve still managed to create the little splash of fun known as BallaFornia.com.

Fear not. next year I’ll have more interviews with fabulous local folk, and many, many other surprises.

However, now it’s time to relax and celebrate the triumphs, learn from the mistakes, and grab the future by the horns, because we are riding that cruelty-free, hypothetical bull to the future my friends!

Talking of the future, if swing is your thing, then you’ll be hopping the hot escargot train to The Main Bar, for a saucy taste of French 1930s gypsy-inspired swing band Hot Club Swing, plus the venue’s house band. If you’d rather be dancing on the ceiling, then the good folk at The George Hotel will be featuring Melbourne five-piece 1980s band Flashback ’80s, as well as live music at The Cider Bar. Tickets cost $25 at the door and include two house beverages. For bookings, call 5333 4866.

If you like tablespoons of sugar, and bag loads of spice, then your mug of New Year tea awaits you at the Babushka Lounge with a special evening of burlesque superbly conjured by Theatre Burlesque, who will hit the venue for a night of sauciness and giggles. What is this BallaFornian going to do, you ask, well I’m still not sure, but it will begin with…

The BallaFornian
The BallaForninian is going to be the drink du jour this coming New Year’s Eve. It’s basically a Cosmopolitan, except the lime has been squeezed by the sunburnt and calloused paws of an Olde Worlde gold prospector, and in each glass there may be more than a slight chance of golden good times…

• 150ml cranberry juice
• 45ml vodka
• 30ml Cointreau
• Squeeze of fresh lime juice 
• Ice cubes
• A golden heart
• 2 lime slices, to serve

Step 1
Pour the cranberry juice, vodka, Cointreau and lime juice into a cocktail shaker. Add ice cubes, cover and shake from the shoulder for 30 seconds.

Step 2
Pour into glasses, serve immediately with a lime slice and enjoy in golden moderation.
